Although both when applying looked very similar; both being English schools, the difference was staggering. My trip began from Klaten as Ms. Dee bid me farewell and I boarded the bus which would take me to Cianjur. [mappress mapid=”7″] Yet again, a horrible journey. I’d gotten cocky, shorts and vest combo on a bus with the AC setting on arctic. It also seemed, despite the vast number of empty seats, locals insisted on sitting next to me, limiting my space even more. Made worse when they’d fall asleep with outward sticking elbows…

My initial reasons for volunteering were admittedly selfish, charmed by the notion of free accommodation. However, I also KNEW I’d have an experience which was completely unique, opening doors otherwise locked. [mappress mapid=”6″] I left Surabaya in the early morning of February 2nd to the train station headed for Klaten in Central Java. I was helpfully shuffled along by staff to the correct platform, and caught my 4-hour train ride. I arrived at the single platformed station, whom obviously don’t see many tourists…

Rather than being strictly a backpacking trip, it would be spent volunteering. An entire month was spent on the island volunteering across the country, exceeding all expectations.   I happily left Kuta arriving at Ubung bus station in my bargain Uber. My plan? Didn’t have one. Didn’t know where I was headed next, I only knew I needed to get to Java, fast. Turns out the visa ballache put me behind schedule. I needed to be in Klaten (in central Java) by the 2nd of February, over 400 miles away from where I was on January…

    Bali (Part 2)

Next target, Bali…but I found myself heading back to Lombok. The damn ticket I’d bought needed me to go back to Lombok to the café I bought it from. That’s where I sat, soaking wet boots from the boat exit, waiting for someone to turn up. Eventually I was shuffled onto a mini-bus, no information of what the hell was going on. All I knew was the ticket I bought would take me to Kuta in Bali. Remember, just go with it, everything seems to work out that way.   The minibus took me all the way to the dock at Lembar where I stepped off with a few other…

    Gili Trawangan

Gili Trawangan, the tropical island with a split personality. On the one hand, it’s a stunning peaceful paradise surrounded by gorgeous oceans filled with life including turtles. On the other hand, it is the mecca for sin away from the strict hand of the Indonesian government.   This trip began straight from the hotel on Lombok, where the handy man who’d arranged my Mount Rinjani climb also arranged transfers to Gili T. Despite every second building in Senggigi offering transfers all over Lombok, I felt obligated to the handy man, being such a charming smooth-talking swindler. “The boat to Gili T included in the price” After a brief pause of…

    Lombok

When I’ve been asked “where’s your favourite place in Indonesia?”, without thinking, I reply “Lombok”. This is where I first fell in love with the REAL Indonesia. Not the tourist pandering streets of Bali. However, I didn’t get off to the best of starts. [mappress mapid=”5″]   Day 1 After a 6 hour lay-over in Bali after arriving from Labuan Bajo, I arrived in the only airport on the island in the centre, Praya. I didn’t know much about the go-to places in Lombok yet, all I knew was Senggigi, the most touristy location on the island. I’d also found a bus service from the airport to Senggigi; roughly £2…

    Labuan Bajo

Watch this video on YouTube ^ A re-cap of my 2-day tour of Komodo Island ^   When I told people I’d be visiting Labuan Bajo, I got the same reaction: “Where?”. I’d never heard of it either. I had only one reason to travel to this unknown location in far East Indonesia; to see a Komodo dragon. Labuan Bajo is on the island Flores, far from touristy Bali, but still the biggest development on this otherwise perfectly untouched island. Where every other island has their own language, here each village has their own. Day 1   A 1½ hour flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo airport eventually landed in…

    Bali (Part 1)

When I told people I was visiting Bali, they didn’t know the country it belonged to (Indonesia for those who don’t), some thinking it was its own country. Goes to show how well known Bali is, giving me such high expectations. I was to be thoroughly disappointed.   My time in Bali was divided into two segments, first when I arrived from Australia on the 30th of December, spending New Years there. The second, a few weeks later totaling 2 weeks. This post discusses my first stint. I flew at 7pm from Darwin, leaving Oz and into one of the most anticipated countries on my list, Indonesia, landing in Bali…

    Indonesia

Why Indonesia?   This is a country which seems just so mysterious to me, due mainly to the fact that I knew so little about Indonesia. Much like my mother whom only recently checked a map to see where her son would be travelling to. When looking at potential destinations for my trip, Indonesia stood out, and early on I knew that I’d spend a considerable amount of time there. Originally I planned for it to be the country where I’d end my journey. However travelling in the opposite direction and grabbing a short flight from Australia has created some interesting opportunities. Travelling Indonesia:   As shown in the last…
