Having the right gear makes the real difference. It can also mean the difference between life and death if you’re not careful. More realistically, it must be lightweight, durable and dependable.

  1. Tent: A good quality tent is a top priority. Make sure it’s spacious enough for your group and weather-appropriate.
  2. Sleeping Bag: A sleeping bag that’s suitable for all conditions. Nobody wants to spend their night shivering.
  3. Sleeping Pad or Air Mattress: You lose most of your body heat through the ground, therefore a proper sleeping pad or air mattress adds a layer of insulation as well as comfort.

If you’re spending a few days out in the wilderness, then it’s important to pack the right tools to keep you fueled up. Even if it’s just for a couple of hours, make sure to pack enough chocolate bars!

  1. Camping Stove: A portable camping stove is essential for cooking meals. Making fires is far less easy or legal in many cases. Don’t forget the fuel!
  2. Cookware: A lightweight pot and pan for all your cooking needs.
  3. Utensils: Unless you want to eat with your hands, bring a fork, knife, spoon or any other utensil.
  4. Plates and Bowls: Lightweight, reusable options are the best.
  5. Mugs: For your morning coffee or evening cocoa.
  6. Food: Obviously! Plan your meals in advance and bring easy-to-cook options like pasta, rice, and canned goods.
  7. Trash Bags: Leave no trace.

Another make-or-break essential is the clothes on your back and especially the boots on your feet! Expect the best, but always prepare for the worst.

  1. Shirts: Pack a mix of short-sleeve and long-sleeve shirts. Make sure they’re breathable!
  2. Pants: Some lightweight, waterproof pants and a warmer more comfortable pair for colder evenings.
  3. Shorts: In case of some good weather, make sure you have an equally strong, lightweight and waterproof pair of shorts that are comfortable for hiking. I highly recommend
  4. Jacket: A waterproof rain jacket is a must.
  5. Fleece or Sweater: Essential for layering and staying warm in the evenings or early mornings.
  6. Underwear and Socks: Pack enough for each day plus extras (for emergencies!)
  7. Hat: A wide-brimmed hat for sun protection and a warm beanie for cold weather.
  8. Gloves: Warm gloves for cold conditions and lighter gloves for sun protection while hiking.
  9. Footwear: Hiking Boots or Shoes: Sturdy and comfortable for walking long distances.
